The colonnaded, U-shaped structure was complements the neo-classical style of the nearby Field Museum of Natural History, but the correlation was lost when the Park District Building was built just to the north. The design recalls ancient Greek and Roman arenas with Doric columns rising 100 feet above the arena. Capacity: The stadium was designed to accommodate crowds of 55,000 but adaptations have been made to hold larger crowds. In 1927, 100,000 viewed the 1927 Dempsey-Tunney heavyweight championship fight here. In 1954, over 250,000 showed up for a religious event, the Marian Year Tribute. Origin of Name: renamed in 1925 by governor Frank O. Lowden in memory of Americans killed in World War I and “to all the fallen heroes of all the wars ever fought.” Original Architect/Firm: Holabird & Roche. Date Completed: 1924
