By Eric Foner and Olivia Mahoney 1990, Soft cover, 179 pages, Black and White photographs and drawings throughout. A House Divided is published in conjunction with a major exhibition on the Civil War era at the Chicago Historical Society. Including some six hundred artifacts and images from the Society’s vast collections, the exhibition examines the institution of slavery, explores the economic development of the antebellum North and West, traces the rise of the antislavery movement and the sectional political controversies that led to war, and treats the Civil War both as a bloody military confrontation and as a catalyst of far-reaching changes in American life.
