The oldest surviving National League ballpark, Wrigley Field is one of the few ballparks still standing built in baseball’s “golden age,” 1910-1925. During that period, permanent materials such as steel, brick, and concrete were used, as opposed to wood, as well as post-and-beam construction, which allowed fans to be closer to the field. Davis had also designed Chicago’s original Comiskey Park, home to the White Sox, which has since been demolished. Wrigley Field’s nickname - “the friendly confines” - originates in part from its ivy-colored walls and hand-operated scoreboard. In its urban setting, it feels like an old-time ballpark, surrounded by views of homes rather than parking lots where fans gather on their rooftops to watch their team. Weeghman (now Wrigley) Field, was originally home of the Chicago Federals. Mr. Weeghman bought the ball club with a group of investors, including chewing gum magnate, William Wrigley, for whom the ballpark is named today. Original Architect/Firm: Zachary Taylor Davis. Date Completed: 1914.
